Ahead of it’s hugely anticipated debut tonight on ABC on iview comes the news that the ABC have given Cleverman a second series commission.
The genre busting, high profile future set drama has also just made it’s debut in the US on SundanceTV (Sundance are co-funders of the series) and will also appear on BBC Three in the UK.
The commission is for another 6 episodes and the series will again be produced by Goalpost Pictures Australia and Pukeko Pictures from New Zealand with the production itself based in Sydney.
The high concept series, which stars Hunter Page-Lochard as well as international stars Iain Glen and Frances O’Connor, takes us to the near future “where a species from ancient mythology must live amongst humans and battle for survival in a world that wants to silence, exploit and destroy them. At the heart of the story are two estranged brothers, Koen (Hunter Page-Lochard) and Waruu West (Rob Collins), who are forced together to fight against terrifying enemies, both human and not of this world. But can Koen, a man bestowed with a powerful gift and destined to become the Cleverman, learn to harness his power before everything around him crumbles?”
Sally Riley who is the head of Scripted Production at ABC TV was naturally pleased at the recommission saying “it’s rare that you get the green light for a second series of a show before the first season has even gone to air, so for me it’s a testament to the quality and audience appeal of Cleverman. It is also a testament to the unflinching support the show has from our funding partners Screen Australia and Screen NSW here in Oz, and our international partners Red Arrow and Sundance TV.”
Directors of season one, Wayne Blair and Leah Purcell, have also been retained for the second run of episodes, no word on which members of the cast will be back though, probably a good idea to save on spoilers!
Cleverman premieres on ABC TV at 9.30pm.
