Underground – The Julian Assange Story, Channel 10′s telemovie about the early years of Julian Assange is to get a screening at the Toronto Film Festival.

The telemovie, which focuses on the formative teenage years of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in the late 1980s, will make its world debut later this year on TEN.

Network Ten Executive Producer Drama and Production, Rick Maier, said: “Very rarely do you get the jump on the international market. This is not only great recognition for the film itself, and the bold leap of faith, but for the Australian television industry full stop. TEN is immensely proud of this acknowledgement.”

Underground – The Julian Assange Story stars newcomer Alex Williams in his first major role, accompanied by Golden Globe winner Rachel Griffiths and Emmy award winner Anthony LaPaglia. Completing the stellar cast are Callan McAuliffe (The Great Gatsby) and Laura Wheelwright (Animal Kingdom).

In selecting Underground – The Julian Assange Story for the Festival, Toronto has bestowed a rare accolade. Only a handful of films produced for television have ever been programmed by the event, which is considered the pre-eminent platform into the North American marketplace.

Underground – The Julian Assange Story was written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Robert Connolly (Balibo) and produced by Helen Bowden (The Slap) for Matchbox Pictures.
