KYLIE MILLAR ELIMINATED ON MASTERCHEF AS THINGS HOT UP
Thanks to a highly rare mistake with her Dessert Kylie Millar has been eliminated from Masterchef leaving just five contestants remaining as the show enters it’s final week.
Last night’s challenge saw the six remaining contestants cook up a storm at one of Sydney’s premier restaurants, Guillaume at Bennelong, under the watchful eye of two-hatted Head Chef Guillaume Brahimi.
The task in front of them was immense, as the top six were challenged to run lunch service in a professional restaurant for 60 discerning patrons who know their French food.
Each contestant was charged with cooking one dish from the restaurant’s menu. With just three hours of prep, the clock was soon ticking. With Guillaume running the pass, there was no room for error from any of the contestants.
Kylie seemed to be in the strongest position from the start. With first pick of dishes, she naturally chose one that played to her strengths, a dessert, Nougat Glace, leaving self-proclaimed dessert queen Julia at a disadvantage with a savoury dish.
Audra was quickly at a disadvantage when Guillaume was disappointed with his first taste of her pistachio cake, as she’d forgotten the central ingredient of the nuts. With just an hour to go before service, Audra took a massive chance, binned the cake and decided to start again from scratch.
The pressure was getting to everyone. Ben found himself under the pump perfecting the restaurant’s signature mash, while Julia’s timing seemed to be out of control. Before the contestants knew it, service arrived at a lightning pace.
With an electric service in progress, no contestant was allowed to help another – it was every man for himself. Service complete, a last surprise was in store with a shock tasting by Guillaume, along with the three MasterChef judges in the restaurant.
Breaking into one of Kylie’s parfaits, Guillaume discovered it was way too sweet and the mixture had curdled due to overwhipping of the cream with the eggs. It was a disaster, rendering the dish inedible for all, and Kylie was devastated by the sight of her still-full plates returning to the kitchen.
It was a bomb-shell moment for MasterChef, as Kylie was announced as the bottom contestant.
With Kylie in tears and unable to speak, friend Audra stepped in and said: “She was unbelievable. The amount of talent this girl has, generosity and such great spirit.”
In a massive surprise, Guilliaume told Kylie she was a great talent and offered her a position in the team at his restaurant, working with the pastry team.
Kylie said: “My highlight was Jamie Oliver. It was just incredible. He’s an amazing guy. I knew that’s what I wanted to do the rest of my life. Working with Adriano and Andre was just incredible as well, and meeting those pastry chefs I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. The thing I will take away from MasterChef is the friendships along the way, and the comments from the judges tonight were really encouraging. I want to go out there and immerse myself in the world of pastry.”
George Calombaris said: “I don’t want to hear of you going back to physio. They don’t need you. We need you.”
Now back at home, Kylie is currently doing work experience with a number of pastry chefs. Although just a dream for now, Kylie one day hopes to open her own dessert bar or cafe. “Being creative with food is my passion and excites me,” she said.
“I would like to develop my knowledge in food and cooking to become a pastry chef. I would also love to create a book that excites people enough to get them into the kitchen and cooking,” she said.
We actually expected Kylie to make to at least final three and was one of our outside chances to win the whole comp right from the start so we were surprised last night when it was a dessert that sent her packing.
