Showtime have announced that they have given drama pilot Billions a 12 episode series commission. The series, which is set in New York and mixes high finance and politics, will star Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis.
Creators and exec producers are Brian Koppelman, David Levien, Neil Burger (who directed the pilot) and Andrew Ross Sorkin, filming is due to begin later this year with a planned premiere date of 2016.
Giamatti plays US Attorney Chuck Rhoades who crosses swords with high rolling and highly ambitious hedge fund supremo Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (played by Lewis).
David Nevins, Showtime president said “the dynamic star pairing of Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis is matched by an equally exciting team in the writing of this show. Andrew Ross Sorkin, one of the preeminent financial journalists of our time, has joined forces with Brian Koppelman and David Levien, two of Hollywood’s most accomplished screenwriters, to tackle an incredibly timely and buzzy subject. With this caliber of writing and acting, I think the show’s authenticity and insider look will have great appeal to a discerning audience.”
The cast also includes Maggie Siff, Malin Akerman, Toby Leonard Moore, David Costabile and Condola Rashad.
