The Office and Phoenix Nights to do battle at British Comedy Awards

The Office and Phoenix Nights are set to go head-to-head at tonight’s British Comedy Awards.

Both shows have four nominations each, with their respective stars, Ricky Gervais and Peter Kay, competing for the Best Comedy Actor.

The category also pits Gervais, aka David Brent, against fellow Office star Martin Freeman, who plays sales rep Tim.

Both shows are nominated for Best TV Comedy and the People’s Choice Award, while Phoenix Nights actor Dave Spikey – who co-wrote the series and plays club compere Jerry St Clair – is up for Best Comedy Newcomer.

Jonathan Ross is hosting the awards at the LWT headquarters on London’s Southbank, shown live on ITV.

Best Comedy Actress is between Ab Fab star Joanna Lumley, Gimme Gimme Gimme’s Kathy Burke and impressionist Ronni Ancona.

Have I Got News For You, I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here and V Graham Norton are in the running for Best Comedy Entertainment Programme.

Graham Norton is also up for Best Comedy Entertainment Personality alongside Jonathan Ross and Paul Merton.

Other shows hoping to scoop a gong include Cold Feet, The Kumars At No 42 and Six Feet Under.

Celebrities lined up to present tonight’s awards include Johnny Vegas, Melinda Messenger, Rio Ferdinand and Roger Moore.
