The latest in Andrew Graham-Dixon’s The Art Of… series The Art of France premieres Monday 30 January 2017 at 9.00pm on BBC Four. It tells the dramatic story of French art.
Andrew Graham-Dixon reveals how French Art emerged from a struggle between tradition and revolution, between rulers and a people who didn’t always want to be ruled.
Starting with the first great revolution in French art – the invention of Gothic architecture – Andrew Graham-Dixon traces its development through the arrival of Classicism and the age of Enlightenment to the very eve of the French Revolution.
He shows how, along the way, some of the greatest art the world has ever seen was born, including the paintings of Poussin, Watteau and Chardin; the decadent delights of Boucher and the great history paintings of Charles le Brun.
