Death In Paradise Season 6 Episode 5 (BBC-1 2 Feb 2017, Julian Wadham)

Published

Episode 5 of this 6th season of Death In Paradise, which airs on BBC-1 on Thursday 2 February at 9.00pm is the first episode of a two-part special which sees the team leave the idyllic Caribbean Shores and head to London in pursuit of suspects connected to a murder committed on Saint Marie.

When the captain of a boat, Tom Lewis, fails to return home after the night of a storm, Humphrey and the team conduct a search party. When they find Tom’s body on his boat a mile out to sea, the radar equipment proving that no other vessel came near the boat all night, all evidence points towards him being a tragic casualty of the storm.

But Humphrey is convinced there’s more to it. Why would an experienced sailor sail out in the middle of a storm? As Tom and his partner have no connections to the island, apart from to the holidaymakers who chartered his boat for the week, Humphrey struggles to solve this apparently motiveless murder.

The discovery of a stray cufflink provides the team with the vital lead they need, pointing them towards a banking company back in London. With Saint Marie’s police reputation on the line and with the Commissioner’s permission, Humphrey, Florence and Dwayne head to London, where they team up with DI Jack Mooney in order to track down the murderer.

Meanwhile Dwayne comes face to face with his estranged father and Humphrey must come to terms with Martha’s recent departure from the island.

Cast: DI Humphrey Goodman is played by Kris Marshall, DS Florence Cassell by Joséphine Jobert, Officer Dwayne Myers by Danny John-Jules, Officer JP Hooper by Tobi Bakare, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson by Don Warrington, Catherine Bordey by Elizabeth Bourgine, Tom Lewis by John Marquez, Sophie Boyd by Amy Beth Hayes, Steve Thomas by Luke Newberry, Dominic Green by Henry Pettigrew, Frank Henderson by Julian Wadham, Martin West by Nigel Betts, DI Jack Mooney by Ardal O’Hanlon, Hema Patel by Sunetra Sarker, Lucy Chapman by Anna Crilly, Rachel Baldwin by Claire Rushbrook, and Nelson Myers by Ram John Holder.

Within These Walls Deception

In Deception Jane Sims is serving a four year sentence for being involved in a armed robbery, she quickly develops a strong friendship with Officer Mary White, Hane is an inveterate liar and quickly has Mary wrapped around her finger.

Mary persuades Charles Radley to give Jane a cushy trustee job in the library (Jane is library officer) and Jane is soon using the opportunity to take advantage, especially when a trio of workmen arrive to fix the pipes in the prison, including the library. One of the men, Billy, happens to know Jane quite well. When Mary leaves Billy and Jane alone together they take advantage of the fact. In the following weeks Mary is shocked to find herself pregnant.

Jane has also arranged an escape attempt after Billy finishes his sentence (he only has a few days left on his sentence) and when Officer White discover what the pair are up to Jane begins blackmailing her to keep quiet.

Things take a dramatic turn when Mary (helped by fellow inmate Rosie Doolan) miscarries the baby she is carrying. In a twist she accuses Charles Radley of being the father (the pair had briefly spent a few minutes alone with her when interviewing her for the librarian position).

Deception is quite the hard hitting episode as it happens, touching on lesbianism, abortion, illicit sex in prison and blackmail, all handled with a suitably delicate touch of course.

A very strong supporting cast sees Susan Littler as the deceitful Jane Sims, Gwen Taylor as the naive Officer White and Stephen Yardley as a builder working at Stone Park.
