On Saturday 3 June, from 1.30pm, Ed Chamberlin and Francesca Cumani are at Epsom for live coverage of the second day of the Derby meeting, the biggest event in the flat racing calendar.
After the Oaks, the three-year old fillies’ version of the Derby, on Friday has acted as a warm-up, Saturday is the big day and hosts the most important race of the flat season – the Derby, known as the Blue Riband of the turf.
The race dates back to 1780, and has always been run on the Epsom Downs racecourse, where huge crowds can gather on the hillside to watch. It is Britain’s richest horse race, and the most prestigious of the five classics.
The race also serves as the middle leg of the Triple Crown, preceded by the 2000 Guineas and followed by the St Leger, although the feat of winning all three is now rarely attempted. Its role of honour includes such great names as Nijinsky, Mill Reef, The Minstrel and Shergar. Race day analysis comes from Jason Weaver, AP McCoy and Michael Kinane, additional reporting from Oli Bell and Matt Chapman, and commentary from Richard Hoiles. The Opening Show on ITV kicks off proceedings at on Saturday morning, as Oli Bell and Jason Weaver are in the studio to look ahead to the weekend action.
ITV Racing Live: The Derby airs Saturday 3 June 2017 from 1.30pm on ITV.
