In Crime and Punishment, which airs on ITV on 4 Januarty 2017 at 8.oopm, DCI Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) discover just how far some people will go for power when they investigate the death of a member of the Bleakridge Watch in the most remote village in Midsomer.
The victim is local butcher Angus Colton, who was found lying frozen in his meat freezer. Barnaby and Winter meet Colton’s devastated sister Maxine Lockston (Sarah Powell) and her daughter Tara (Phoebe Campbell). They learn that Angus was investigating a recent spate of burglaries in the village, but had not identified the culprit.
The next port of call is Watch leader Ingrid Lockston (Frances Barber), who set up the Watch two years ago in honour of her brother Frank, Maxine’s husband, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Adrian Peck (Joe Sims), Ingrid’s lackey, tells the police that pub landlord Mitch McAllister hated Angus.
In the pub, Barnaby and Winter learn from a beleaguered Mitch (Neil Morrissey) and his partner Lena (Katy Cavanagh), a mobile hairdresser, that the Watch are a total nuisance. Winter finds it odd that Angus made a 5am phone call to fellow Watch member Azeem Meer (Emilio Doorgasingh). Azeem tells him Angus wanted to borrow his digital camera for Watch business, but the camera is nowhere to be found. Later, Azeem is working late in his hardware shop when someone enters and selects a hammer from the display.
