Explorer Levison Wood begins a new expedition in this four-part series premiering on Sunday 20 August at 8.00pm on Channel 4: It’s an epic, 2600-mile journey across the mighty Caucasus mountain range and five countries on the tense frontier between Europe and Asia. Accompanied by local guides and making his way by any means necessary, Levison travels and lives with some of the most fascinating and diverse people on Earth as he tries to reach his journey’s end on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
In this first episode Levison travels 700 miles along Russia’s militarised southern border, enjoying the legendary hospitality of the Caucasian people while trying to avoid the close attentions of the Russian police. He passes through mountainous landscapes of breathtaking beauty, visits bizarre ruins of ancient civilisations, witnesses a mystical Sufi ceremony, and crosses the notorious former battleground of Chechnya – now ruled by a terrifying strongman – and into Dagestan, where Islamist terrorists hide out in the mountains.
