In this new series, which premieres on Tuesday 31 January 2017 at 8.00pm, Robson Green travels along some of the nation’s most fascinating stretches of coastline to discover just what it is about our shoreline that continues to cast its spell.
Britain has of the most varied coastal landscapes in the world – from sweeping sands and rugged cliffs to mudflats and spits. It is home to colourful seaside towns and historic fishing villages.
In the first episode, Robson visits the shores of North Devon, the location of some of his most precious childhood holidays, where he traces the origins of the British love affair with the coast. It proves to be a journey filled with drama and surprises at every turn.
At Ilfracombe, he finds out how miners dug a network of tunnels through the cliffs to enable Victorian holidaymakers to access the beach and its tidal pool. Robson takes a bracing cold-water swim in it and hears about the Victorians’ passion for sea bathing. His next stop is Clovelly, one of Britain’s best-preserved fishing villages, where he unwittingly finds himself involved in a dramatic clifftop rescue mission. Finally, Robson goes back to basics on the tiny island of Lundy, where he has a scary encounter with an Atlantic grey seal and attempts to climb a 400-foot high sea cliff nicknamed the Devil’s Slide
Tales from the Coast with Robson Green airs Tuesday 31 January 2017 from 8.00pm-9.00pm on ITV.
