Comedian Jack Whitehall is the host for this year’s Royal Variety Performance from the Royal Albert Hall in the presence of Prince Harry. The annual event is held on behalf of the Entertainment Artistes Benevolent Fund, whose patron is the Queen, with proceeds from the evening going to the charity. The first Royal Variety Performance – then known as the Royal Command Performance – was held in July 1912 before King George V and Queen Mary in the Palace Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue. The evening has always featured family entertainment, comedy, singing, dancing, magic and other speciality acts.
This year’s star-studded spectacular includes performances by Sir Elton John, One Direction, Kylie Minogue, Little Mix, Ricky Martin, Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Josh Groban, The Corrs, Brandon Flowers, Beverley Knight, and Britain’s Got Talent winners Jules, Matisse and Friends. The cast of the classic musical Mary Poppins perform a piece from the show and the world famous Cirque de Soleil are on hand to provide some balletic glamour.
Also featured are the cast of the Olivier award- winning The Play that Goes Wrong, while more laughs are provided by Romesh Ranganathan, Matt Forde and Chris Ramsey on what promises to be a fine evening’s entertainment.
