The Trial: A Murder In The Family Episode 3 (Channel 4 23 May 2017)

The Trial: A Murder In The Family

The pioneering new series The Trial continues – blending documentary with drama and revealing the inner workings of the legal system – as a fictional murder case is tried in a real court, by eminent real-life legal professionals and a jury of 12 randomly selected members of the public. The end of the trial draws near, with two key players still to speak.

First up is Lewis Skinner (Kevin Harvey), Carla’s boyfriend at the time of her death, who has a few secrets of his own. While the prosecution position him as a man bereaved, the defence argue that, as a potential alternative suspect for the murder, both his presence and actions present sufficient reasonable doubt for Simon to be acquitted. How will he fare on the stand?

Meanwhile, a critical decision looms for the accused. Will his defence team – renowned real-life QC John Ryder and junior barrister Lucy Organ – advise Simon to take the stand, or might they feel that his testimony could count against him if he’s not up to the task? With juries now allowed to draw inferences from a defendant’s decision not to give evidence, everything hangs in the balance.

The final decision, however, rests with Simon himself. Continues tomorrow.
