THE CHAIR

USA / ABC / x60m-e / 2002

Hosted by John McEnroe this quiz/game show saw contestants  previously having had their resting heart rate determined through a lengthy screening. Once in the Chair, they are spotted with a $5,000 stake and advised of their target heart rate (which starts at 160% of the rest rate and decreases 5% for each question.) Seven questions are offered, with values of $5K, $10K, $15K, $25K, $40K, $50K, and $100K. The contestant may not answer if their heart rate exceeds the target; in that case, they lose money for each second of hyper-tension ($100/second for the first 2 questions, $200 for #3, $300 for #4 and so on.) In addition, the player faces two randomly placed "heartstoppers" - surprises designed to tense them up; the same money-losing rules apply. The game ends when the player runs out of money or misses a question. The contestant gets a chance to "stabilize" their pot after Q#3 (and #5); by doing so, they guarantee themselves that much if they miss a question - but they can still drop below that amount during heart penalties.

THE CHAIR

UK / BBC1 / 10x50m / started 31 August 2002

Producer: Suzy Lamb

Contestants must answer questions while connected to a heart-rate monitor. If their heart-rate goes above a certain point they start losing money until they calm down. Presented by John McEnroe (who also presented the US version).

THE CHAMBER

USA Fox / x60-e / 2002

Two contestants alternate giving answers to a list question. Being able to give one more answer after your opponent falters is worth one point; two points sends you to The Chamber. Once there, you're hooked up to heart rate and blood pressure monitors and strapped in. If the chamber is in hot mode, you're surrounded by flames (and starting at Level 2, the chair rotates); if it's in cold mode, water jets squirt you intermittently. The temperature constantly drops/rises (from a start of 110 or 30 degrees), electronic muscle contractors grab you at progressively quicker intervals, and other distractions are added at higher levels (such as wind gusts at Level 4 and up). Each level lasts for one minute, and each question correctly answered scores $1000. The game ends if you miss two questions in a row, you ask to call off the game, or if a measure of your vital signs exceeds a "danger level" set by the show's medical team for 20 seconds. Ending the game any of these ways halves your winnings. If you make it through all seven levels, and have answered 25 questions or more correctly, your winnings are tripled.

Strange voting style game show. In the words of host Rob Jarvis:, “The contestants do not have to answer any questions, undertake any physical challenges or sing any songs.” Instead, they must simply vote each other off round by round, discussing amongst themselves who they will be voting for next. Each has a game plan – whether it’s playing a straight bat or practising deception – and each will be hoping to take home the £5,000 kitty. First, each contestant has to choose between a blue room or a red room as the discussion arena. This is an important factor, as safety in numbers may guarantee entry to the next round. The discussions are a forum in which to suss each other out, guess an opponent’s tactics and form a personal strategy. There are two such discussions in each round before the votes are cast. Each contestant must give their vote to the panellists, psychologist Linda Papadopoulos and advertising strategist Tim Mellors. Privately, the panellists will also dissect the behaviour and body language of
the contestants. After two rounds, three people remain, and somebody has to lose. It is the job of the loser to decide who gets their hands on the £5,000 prize money – so if the loser has any personal grudges that have been spawned during the contest, it  may well dictate the final decision."
