NAKED ELVIS

Quiz. Late night pop trivia show hosted by Tania Strecker and a naked Elvis clone.

 

NAKED JUNGLE

UK / Channel Five / 1x60m-e / 2000 6 June - Tuesday 10.55pm

A nude game show presented by (horror of horrors) a naked Keith Chegwin. The object of the Jungle set game involved the naked contestants trying to track down fig leafs. Remarkable the large set used was the set used for the kids game show Jungle Run.

 

NAME THAT TUNE

UK / Thames / x30m-e / 1983-87

Producer: David Clark

A musical knowledge based quiz in which the contestants had to specify how many notes they would need to hear to 'name that tune'. The series had been a segment on the variety show Wednesday at Eight. Hosted by Tom' Connor and then Lionel Blair. Also resident on the show were singer Maggie Moone and the Alan Braden Orchestra. The show returned on Channel Five on 31 May 1998 (and to 1999) hosted by Jools Holland.

 

NEEDLEMATCH

Producer: John P. Hamilton

A Britain against America game style show hosted by Keith Fordyce and in which the latest records were 'put in the ring' against each other, so to speak.

 

THE NEIGHBORS

USA / ABC-Warner-Carruthers / x30m-e / 1975 Weekdays 2.30pm

Producer: Bill Carruthers

Quiz. Five women neighbors take part in a quiz sort of seeing how much they know about each other. The five split into two teams, one of three, the other two. Host was Regis Philbin, assisted by Jane Nelson and the announcer was Joe Seiter.

 

NEVER MIND THE BUZZCOCKS

UK / BBC2-Hatrick / x30m-e / 1997-continuing

Comedy music panel game show in the style of Have I Got News For You. Hosted by Mark Lamarr and with resident team captains Phil Jupitus and Sean Hughes. Hughes was replaced by Bill Bailey Late 2002.

 

NEVER MIND THE BUZZCOCKS

USA / VH1-Hatrick / x30m-e / 2002

US version of the above hosted by Marc Maron. It featured two  three-member teams, each made up of two 
celebrity guests and one regular team captain, taking part in various music themed rounds, although the emphasis was very much on the comedy.

 

NIGHT FEVER

UK / Channel Five / x50m-e / 1997-continuing

Bizarre celebrity karaoke show in which a team of five males do battle against five females in various singing rounds. Based on a French original and hosted by singer Suggs. From season two Sarah Cawood and Will Mellor assisted Suggs with Mellor on the girls side and Cawood on the boys.

 

NO BOUNDARIES

Warner Brothers / x30m-e / 2002 

In a quest for $100,000 and an SVU, 15 contestants trek from Vancouver Island to the Arctic Circle in a 30-day competition. Hosted by Troy Hartman.Some challenges were "team reward" ones where the group had to work together whilst others focused on working alone. Cancelled before the end of the trek. 

 

NOW GET OUT OF THAT

UK / BBC1 / x30m-e / 1984

Producer: Philip Franklin / Direcor: Brian Strachan

An adventure style game show hosted by Bernard Falk in which two teams, one British the other American attempted to be the first to rescue a scientist trapped behind enemy lines.

 

NOW YOU SEE IT

UK / ITV-Scottish TV-Talbot Television / x30m-e / 1980

Producer: Jim McCann / Associate Producer: Liz Davies

A crossword game type quiz that was played on a large electronic board hosted by Scots comic Johnny Beattie and the format was owned by Talbot Television, the show was networked on ITV in the afternoons. Thanks to Ross Chalder for contributing to this entry.

 

NUMBER PLEASE

USA / ABC / x30mins / January 31, 1961-December 29, 1961 black and white

Host: Bud Collyer

Number Please was basically the game Hangman with digits used instead of letters. Two players alternated in calling out numbers on a board on his or her row of 20 spaces to see what letter was under the blank space beneath that number. Gradually a phrase involving a prize was revealed, and the first contestant to identify the phrase before all letters were revealed won the prize. Winners could continue to play more rounds for additional prizes and a $500 check. Bud Collyer hosted the show three days after the cancellation of the other Mark Goodson—Bill Todman Production he oversaw. Beat the Clock. Goodson and Todman had sold this series to CBS in 1959 for a guaranteed daytime run of at least 26 weeks, but feeling uncertain about its potential, they stopped it from going on the network at that time. 

 

OBLIVIOUS

UK / ITV / x50m-e / 2001

Comedy game show hosted by Davina McCall  in which the contestants don't actually realise they are taking part. In the studio and on location, people are surprised to discovered not only that they had been caught on camera but also that they may have won themselves thousands of pounds.

 

ODD ONE OUT

UK / BBC / x30m-e / 1983-85

Producers: Roger Ordish, John Bishop, Paul Ciani

Quiz hosted by Paul Daniels that saw contestants having to decide which was the odd one out of any given set, the rounds involved words, pictures and occasional music rounds.

 

ONE FALSE MOVE

UK / BSB / x30m-e / 1990

Quiz broadcast on the short lived satellite channel BSB.

 

ONE MAN AND HIS DOG

UK / BBC / x40m-e / 1966-99 then occasional specials

Sheepdog trials with shepherds and their dogs competing in a knockout competition. Phil Drabble hosted the show for the first 17 years then Robin Page took over. The BBC decided to abandon the show in 1999 but after pressure from fans and the media consented to make occasional specials since then.

 

ONE TO WIN

UK / Channel Five-Grundy / x30m-e / 2000 Weeknights 5.30pm

General knowledge quiz with almost the exact same format as the BBC's Going for Gold with each round seeing someone knocked out until only one person remained. Hosted by Paul Roseby.

 

ONLY JOKING

UK / ITV / 7x30m-e / 1992 25 April - 13 June

Comedy game show hosted by Bradley Walsh in which two family teams compete in joke telling rounds. Dave Lee and Dave Wolfe were also regulars.

 

THE OTHER HALF

Game show in which a set of contestants have to decide which of a collection of couples are genuine partners, hosted by Dale Winton.

Extravagant quiz in which two couples were flown to an exotic location where they then competed in various challenges. The winning couple were then allowed to stay and enjoy their holiday. Hosted by Anneka Rice.

Quiz Show hosted by George Layton with contestants being couples who were quizzed on the knowledge of their partners.

UK / BBC1 / x30m-e / 1998-continuing Weekdays 12.00 noon

General knowledge type quiz show with a knockout premise with a number of contestants starting and one being forced out each round. Hosted initially by Fred Dinage and then later by Eamonn Holmes.

Australia / 9 Network / x30m-e / 2002 (First Episode: Monday 11 February)

Quiz show, shown weeknights at 5.30pm, hosted by John Burgess, it featured 10 contestants being knocked down to one in a series of word association rounds. Based on a UK original (see above) and filmed in Melbourne even though John was based in Sydney and commuted (he had his own morning Sydney radio show).

 

PERFECT MATCH

Australia / 10 Network-Grundy / x30m-e / 1984-89 and 2002-

Game show. Blind Date style show hosted by Greg Evans (1984-86) then Cameron Daddo (1987-88) before Evans returned for the 1988-89 season, the show used the same format as Blind Date with each contestant choosing from one of three hidden partners with the couple then coming back the next week to talk about how they got on. Also taking part were hostesses Debbie Newsome (1984-85), Tiffany Lamb (1986) and Kerrie Friend (1987-89). The show was revived on Saturday 24 August 2002 host was Shelley Craft.

 

PERFECT MATCH

UK / Channel 4 / ?x60m / Started 1 August 2002

Dating show. Each week there is a man or woman who wants to find their perfect partner. A panel consisting of two friends/family and a relationship counsellor interview potential dates to ascertain their suitability. The selected partner moves in with the person for a week to see how it works out.

 

PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT

UK / London Weekend Television-Talbot-Goodson Todman / x30m-e / 1980-87 / 1995-continuing

Playing card based quiz show in which contestants had to answer a question and then decide whether a row of cards (to be turned over) would be higher or lower than the preceding one. Hosted by Bruce Forsyth. The series is also known as Bruce Forsyth's Play Your Cards Right. 

 

POKERFACE

UK / ITV1 / 7x60m / starting 10 July (daily)

Producer: Sue Allinson

Each edition six contestants answer multi-choice general knowledge questions and then they have to bluff the other contestants on how well they did. Each round one player has the opportunity to fold and go away with the cash they have thus far accumulated if they believe themselves to be the worst player. If no one folds then the worst player is eliminated automatically and goes away with nothing. The winner of each edition go head-to-head in a final edition. Presented by Ant and Dec.

A quiz show with pop music as its theme, hosted by DJ Gary Crowley.

 

POP QUEST

UK / ITV (Yorkshire) / x30m-e / 1975-1979

Pop quiz hosted by DJ Mike Read who would later go on to present the BBC's Pop Quiz (see below). Mike Read was only the host for one series with a lady called Megg Nichol. The first series was hosted by Steve Merrick, who was at the time the Head of Music for the fledgling Pennine Radio in Bradford. Series 2 was hosted by Kid Jensen and Sally James (Tiswas) and Mike did not come onto the scene until series 3. The show finished because Mike Read got a radio 1 job and could not be employed by ITV/YTV. Thanks to Ian Bolt for additional info.

Late night entertainment, part quiz show, part chat show in which Phil Alexander quizzed celebrities about pop music and videos.

A pop star heavy quiz hosted by DJ Mike Read, the panel tended to feature the acts popular at the time so was usually made up of members of Spandau Ballet or Duran Duran most of the time.

UK TV's first pop quiz, hosted by Muriel Young, Young also hosted a brief sequel called Countdown.

Quiz show with a pop music theme hosted by Chris Tarrant, team captains were DJ's Mike Smith and David Hamilton.

 

THE PRICE IS RIGHT

UK / Central-Talbot-Goodson Todman / x60m-e and x30m-e / 1984-88/1995-continuing

Game show with contestants picked from the audience with a shout of 'Come on Down'. They then competed in rounds that involved guessing the prices of various items of consumer ware. Originally hosted by Leslie Crowther and then for the late 1990's revival by Bruce Forsyth.

 

PRICKLY HEAT

UK / Sky One-London Weekend Television / x60m-e / 1998-continuing

Executive Producers: Nigel Lythgoe, Jamie Roberts / Producer: Mike Brosnan

Game show in which teams of four boys and four girls from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were taken to Majorca for two weeks to compete in the 'beach Olympics' which were basically a series of risque games. Presented by Julian Clary and Davina McCall (season One, then Denise Van Outen (from season two).

Game show hosted by comic Lennie Bennett in which members of the public teamed up with celebrity guests, with the game having a joke telling aspect to it.

 

THE PYRAMID GAME

UK / London Weekend Television / x30m-e / 1980's

Producer: Alasdair MacMillan

Quiz show hosted by Steve Jones. Contestants teamed up with a celebrity, they would then take it in turns to describe a word with the other then having to guess.
