TAKE A LETTER

UK / Granada / 130x30m-e / 1962-64 black and white

Producer: John Hamp

Quiz show in which contestants were given a clue that in turn led to a letter that in turn led to a word being spelled out. Whoever got the word or sentence the quickest, won the prize. Top prize was £34 and the host was Bob Holness.

 

TAKE YOUR PICK

UK / Associated Rediffusion-Thames / 300+ x30m-e / 1955-68 (A-R) and 1992-98(Thames)

Popular quiz show in which contestants had to choose whether to open the box (for a prize) or take the money offered to them, to get to that stage in the competition the contestant had to answer a series of questions without using the words yes or no. Original host was Michael Miles and then when the show was revived in the 1990's Des O'Connor took over.

 

TALKABOUT

UK / ITV / x30m-e / 1990's

Afternoon quiz hosted by Andrew O'Connor in which three teams of two talked about various subjects trying to guess ten keywords involved each time.

 

TECHNO GAMES

UK / BBC2 / 5x30m-e / 2000 20-24 March Monday-Friday 6.20pm 

Producer: Stephen Carsey / Director: Danielle Peck

Game show, spin off from Robot Wars with 80 robots taking part in a series of contests (most with a sporting theme) such as long jump, swimming, football etc. Tying in with National Science Week and presented by Ulrika Jonsson, Sophie Blake and Ed Hall.

 

TELL THE TRUTH

UK / ATV / x30m-e / 1961 Black and White

Producer: Rita Gillespie

Game show with a celebrity panel trying to guess which of three people were who they claimed to be. Hosted by Shaw Taylor.

 

TELLY ADDICTS

UK / BBC1 / x30m-e / 1985-98

Television themed quiz show hosted by Noel Edmonds in which two teams of contestants (usually four but for the final series there were three teams of two) are testing on their TV general knowledge. The first series was on a winner stays on basis and one family, the Paynes managed to stay on for the whole run, later series used a knockout format.

 

TELLYSTACK

UK / UK Gold (Pay TV) / x30m-e / 1997

A television themed quiz show hosted by Paul Ross. The show has been so far one of satellite channel UK Gold's few original productions.

 

TEMPTATION ISLAND

USA / Fox / 6x60m-e / 2001

Bizarre 'gameshow' that took three supposedly committed couples to an island inhabited by 26 good looking single men and women in order to try and tempt them to stray from their partners, the couples were kept in separate parts of the island and the women were put in the same part of the island as the single men and vice versa. Versions have also been seen in the UK and Australia (where every couple who appeared ended up separating after the show was over).

 

TEST THE NATION - THE NATIONAL IQ TEST

BBC1 / 1x90, 1x70m / 11 May 2002

Live show that set out to assess the nation’s IQ with a series of tests. 70 questions examined the five intelligence areas of language, memory, logic, numbers and perception. A follow up programme on the same evening gave the answers along with preliminary results of those taking part interactively on the internet and digital television. Presented by Anne Robinson and Phillip Schofield.

 

THEY THINK IT'S ALL OVER  

UK / BBC1 / x30m-e / 1995-continuing

Irreverent sports comedy panel quiz hosted by Nick Hancock. Team captains are Gary Lineker and David Gower, resident guests on the show are Rory McGrath (on Gary's side) and Lee Hurst (on David's side), Hurst was later replaced by Jonathan Ross. The general level of the show can be gauged by the fact that one of the rounds is called Feel the Sportsman. Season 2002 started 18 January and consisted of 8x30 minute episodes.

 

THREE LITTLE WORDS

UK / ITV Network- Harlech TV / 80+x30 minute episodes / 1967-84
Creator: Roy Ward Dickson / Producers: Derek Clark, Ken Price

Midday quiz show hosted mostly by Don Moss and then Alan Taylor (although Dave Allen took over towards the end of the shows run), this actually started in the late 60's but wasn't networked until 1976. The thrust of the game was the two teams of two (members of the public no celebs) had to describe a mystery word using only three key words. Hostesses included actress Linda Hayden and Sue Ann Snook. 

 

THREE'S A CROWD

USA / 1979

Daytime quiz show testing who knew a husband best - his wife or his secretary.

 

THREE, TWO, ONE

UK / Yorkshire / 180x60m-e / 1978-87

Producers: Derek Burrell-Davies, Mike Goddard, Ian Bolt, Graham Wetherall, Terry Heneberry

Quiz show in which three couples tried to avoid winning the Dusty Binn booby prize (although the Dusty Binn figurines actually became quite a cult collectible item and Dusty Binn almost became bigger than the show itself). The show used sketches interspersed with General Knowledge rounds. Hosted was Ted Rogers and the show was based on a Spanish original called Uno, Dos, Tres.

 

THRILL OF A LIFETIME

Canada / CTV / 150x30m-e / 1981-87

Creators Sidney M. Cohen, Willie Stein / Director: Sidney M. Cohen

Reality series that offered ordinary people the opportunity to fulfil a life's ambition whether it be meeting a favourite celebrity , going to Las Vegas, joining the army to diving to the bottom of the sea. The series was revived in 2002 again produced by Sidney M. Cohen Thanks to Sidney M. Cohen for his contribution to this entry.

 

TIMECHASE

Canada / History Television / x30m-e / 1997-98

Quiz show hosted by Sheldon Turcott with a trio of contestants trying to win cash and prizes by answering questions with a historical theme. Played over three rounds and with each round split into decades. Thanks to Sidney M. Cohen for his contribution to this entry.

Weekday nostalgia based quiz hosted by newsreader Martyn Lewis. It featured two teams of two answering questions on news and showbiz items.

TRADING UP

UK / Channel 4 / 6x30m-e / 1999 Fridays 8.00pm

Game show in which contestants were given the chance to upgrade their car for a better model. With Claudia Winkleman and car experts Russell Bulgin and Roger Firth.

 

TREASURE HUNT

UK / Channel 4-Chatsworth / 88x60m-e / 1982-89

Creator: Ann Meo / Producers: Malcolm Heyworth, Peter Holmans, Angela Breheny

Quiz show. Anneka Rice takes to the skies in a chopper searching for clues in various locations for two contestants who were in the studio and couldn't see Anneka (they communicated via Radio Mic). Kenneth Kendall and Wincy Willis were also on hand to try and help the contestants win £1,000. For the final series tennis player Annabel Croft replaced Anneka.

 

TREASURE HUNT

UK / BBC2 / 5x45m / started 16 December 2002 / 6:00pm

Producer: Hester Davies / Executive Producer: Malcoln Heyworth

A revival of the 1980s Channel 4 show. This time Dermot Murnaghan presents from the studio with the contestants as they attempt to solve the clues in a fixed amount of time; and Suzi Perry is out and about in a helicopter following their directions.

TRIVIAL PURSUIT

UK / BBC1-Initial / 6x30m-e / 1990 Tuesdays 7.00pm

General knowledge quiz show based on the famous board game hosted by Rory McGrath.

 

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES

USA / CBS (then NBC) / x30m-e / 1950-74 1977-78 and 1987

Often funny quiz show in which if the contestants got their questions wrong they had to pay the price by taking part in a stunt. The show originally began on NBC radio. After its first season on CBS it then switched to NBC (between the years 1956 and 1965 the show was part of the daytime schedules but also continued as a prime time show until 1958). The show was hosted by Ralph Edwards (1950-51), Jack Bailey (1954-56), Steve Dunne (1957-58) and Bob Barker. The show went into syndication from 1965-74 this version was again hosted by Bob Barker. Then in 1977-78 Bob Hilton hosted another syndicated version. Finally there was another revival in 1987 this was hosted by Larry Anderson. 

 

THE $20 CHALLENGE

Gameshow hosted by Tim Bailey with three Australians trying to survive for three days in a foreign city with nothing but twenty dollars to their name.

 

TWENTY QUESTIONS

A UK celebrity panel game from a radio original that appeared on the BBC during the 1950's and the ITV network (Associated Rediffusion) during 1960 and 1961.

 

2001 TO 1

UK / BBC1 / 4x30m-e 1x50m-e / 1999 4 - 31 December Saturdays 6.40pm (Final episode Friday 7.00pm)

A quiz show with a unique prize - a whole years paid holiday from work, all of the 2000 contestants pledged an hour of their pay to the Children's Promise Millennium Final Hour Appeal in order to take part. Each edition started with 400 contestants being whittled down to one who went forward to the grand final. Presented by Michael Parkinson and Katy Hill. The winner was John Mitchell.

 

ULTRAQUIZ

UK / TVS / x30m-e / 1983-85

Producer: Tony McLaren

Big budget quiz that started off with a thousand contestants whittled down to five who then competed for the £10,000 jackpot. Hosts were Michael Aspel then David Frost and finally Stu Francis and Sara Hollamby.

UNDER ONE ROOF

USA / UPN / 7x60m-e / 2002

Reality style game show hosted by Rob Nelson. In this seven-week  series set in a luxurious beachfront home on a tropical island, five families with (two) teenage children compete in a series of contests. The families live for the duration of the contest in a 
large four-bedroom house on a remote Fijian island. (The bedrooms were originally assigned via a race to see which families could get to the house first.) The sole surviving family got to keep the house, the series was put on "hiatus" (taken off air basically) before the end of it's run.

 

UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE

UK / BBC2 / 973x30m-e (1962-87) / 1962-87 and 1994-continuing

Creator: Don Reid

Highly cerebral quiz for university students. Two teams of four faced a starter for ten and then 3 further questions worth five points each. Although they were not, thanks to camera trickery it looked like the two teams were positioned on top of each other.  Hosted by Bamber Gascoine the show finished in 1987 after 25 years but in 1994 it was revived with Jeremy Paxman hosted. The 1994 revival is a co-production between the BBC and Granada.
