WANTED UK / Channel 4-Hewland / 16x60m-e / 1996-97 First Episode: Wednesday 30 October 1996 Early reality game show that saw teams of two going 'on the run' and being hotly pursued by 'trackers' with the team on the run having to perform one task a day that gave them a good chance of being caught. There was a £1,000 on offer for each day the teams stayed free. Season one was presented by Richard Littlejohn, season two by Ray Cokes.

WATERCOLOUR CHALLENGE UK / C4-Planet 24 North / x30m-e / 1998-continuing Creator: Ed Forsdick / Executive Producer: Mary Durkan / Producer: Amelia Bowman Painting challenge show in which a trio of amateur artists compete to produce a painting in only four hours. The winner of each daily show competed in a final on the Friday with the winner progressing to an eventual grand final. Presented by Hannah Gordon.
UK / BBC2 / x45m-e / 2000 - (First Episode: 14 August shown weekdays 5.15pm ) Creator: Fintan Coyle, Cathy Dunning / Executive Producer: David Young / Producer: Ruth Davis / Title: Jump / Music: Inter Angel Music / Director: Richard Valentine General knowledge knockout quiz presented by Anne Robinson and with a top prize of a possible £10,000. The show was presented by Robinson in a very High Court Judge style and at the end of each round the contestants voted off the poorest performing member of the group and Robinson bid them goodbye telling them "You are the Weakest Link". As of 31 October 2000 the show also had occasional prime time episode and shown on BBC1 under the title The Weakest Link: Champions League. (Prize money was double to £20,000). Robinson still presented. On 5 February 2001 The Seven Network in Australia mounted their own version presented by actress Cornelia Frances. On 16 April 2001 the USA version began on the NBC network also hosted by the UK's Anne Robinson and given a massive media push (A syndicated daytime US version began in 2002 hosted by George Gray with a slightly different format - the show finished in the US early 2003). In Germany the show is broadcast on RTL and presented by Sonja Zeitlow, In Holland it is seen on RTL4 and hosted by Chazia Moura and in Belgium it is hosted by Goedele Liekens. In Thailand when it was shown the programme was criticised by the Thai National Youth Bureau who said 'The show is promoting fierce competition and selfishness among participants. This contravenes Thai generosity.'
WE LOVE TV UK / LWT-B&E / x30m-e / 1984-86 Producers: Brian Wesley, Trevor Hopkins TV themed quiz show hosted by Gloria Hunniford, the main quirk being that a team of celebs took on a team of members of the public.
WHATEVER NEXT UK / BBC / x30m-e / 1987 Producer: Michael Hurll Quiz hosted by Noel Edmonds, the basis of the show had the contestants trying to guess what happened next after being shown a film clip.
WHAT'S MY LINE USA / CBS / x30m-e / 1950-67 (then syndicated 1968-75) Sundays 10.30pm Producer: Mark Goodson, Bill Todman Panel based quiz show in which the celebrity guests attempted to guess the occupations of the contestants (who won money for answering no to the questions of the panel). The show eneded up becoming one of the longest running quiz shows ever. Hosted by John Daly regular panelists included Arlene Francis, Louis Untermeyer (1950-51), Hal Block (1950-53), Dorothy Kilgallen (1950-65), Bennet Cerf (1951-67), Steve Allen (1953-54) and Fred Allen (1954-56). The panel for the first ever show was Louis Untermeyer, Dr Richard Hoffman, Harold Hoffman and Dorothy Kilgallon. Between 1968 and 1975 a syndicated version aired, this was hosted by Wally Bruner and then Larry Blyden (from 1972). See below for details of the UK version.
WHAT'S MY LINE UK / BBC-Thames / 400+x30m-e / 1951-63 / 1973-74 / 1984-90 Creators: Mark Goodson, Bill Todman Popular long running quiz show in which a panel of four celebrities had to try and guess the occupation of the contestants. Eamonn Andrews was the original host and then in the 1970's David Jacobs took over. Angela Rippon was then the host for the eighties run.
WHEELER DEALERS UK / BBC2 / 4x30m-e / 1999 Thursdays 8.30pm Entrepreneurial game show with two teams of three wheeler dealers challenged to make their fortune in a trade they know nothing about with only £1,000 to help them. Hosted by Adrian Chiles.
WHEEL OF FORTUNE Australia / Nine Network / x30m-e / 1959-62 black and white A Sydney based quiz which was not exactly the same as the later Wheel of Fortune, this was hosted by Reg Grundy (the series was also known as Reg Grundy's Wheel of Fortune), the Wheel of Fortune part in this instance being the wheel spun by Reg to see what prizes would be given out. Started life as a radio production.
WHEEL OF FORTUNE UK / Southern/STV / x30m-e / 1969-71 / 1988-continuing Spinning wheel quiz show based on an American original, first time out was produced by Southern and hosted by Michael Miles. Scottish TV had another go at the series with Nicky Campbell hosted and assisted by Carol Smillie. Current hosts are John Leslie and Jenny Powell. The format closely followed the American with the contestants having to guess a phrase or saying, answering a general knowledge question to gain control of the wheel, the wheel had points (100-1000), the contestant then chose a letter, if the letter was there the contestant won the points on the wheel. The current show is occasionally seen prime time (with a £20,000 prize) but more often in a tea-time slot (with a £2,000 prize).
WHEEL OF FORTUNE Australia / 7 Network-Grundy / x30m-e / 1981-continuing Long running Australian version of the famous USA quiz featuring 3 contestants spinning a wheel and trying to solve various well known quotes or phrases etc. There were also special bonuses such as win a free spin but also a bankrupt slot too. Hosts have been:- Ernie Sigley (1981-1984), John Burgess (1984-1996), Tony Barber (1996) and Rob Elliott (1997-), Hostesses have been Adriana Xenides (1981-1999) and Sophie Falkiner (1999-).
WHOSE HOUSE IS IT ANYWAY? Australia / 7 Network / x30m-e / 2002 (First Episode: Friday 15 February / 8.00pm) A kind of cross between a lifestyle show and a game show, hosted by Graeme Bond of Aunty Jack fame this featured three celebrities showing bond around the same house and all three claiming they lived there but only one actually did, with the viewer having to try and guess who did.
WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY? UK / Channel 4-Hatrick / x30m-e / 1988-98 Creators: Dan Patterson, Mark Leveson Improvisational quiz in which the studio audience provided the spark on which the four celebrity contestants adlibbed on. Hosted by Clive Anderson with Richard Vranch on the piano for the occasional musical rounds. Regular appearances were made by John Sessions, Tony Slattery, Josie Lawrence and Mike McShane. A USA version also aired in the late 90's.
WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? UK / ITV-Celador / x30m-e (sometimes x60m-e) / 1998-continuing Creators: David Briggs, Mike Whitehill, Steve Knight / Producer: Colman Hutchinson Britain's most successful ever quiz in which contestants had the chance to win a million pounds by simply answering fifteen general knowledge questions correctly. The questions started off being worth a hundred pounds before doubling up and doubling up until the million was reached. The contestants could walk away with their money at any time (and often did) but also had the chance of three 'lifelines' Ask the Audience, Phone a Friend and Fifty/Fifty (the questions were all multiple choice - with four answers to choose from). Hosted by Chris Tarrant. The format has been sold around the world and the first winner of a million (dollars) was on the USA version in an edition broadcast 19 November 1999 when John Carpenter from Connecticut triumphed. Paddy Spooner, a contestant on 30 March 2000, won a quarter of a million pounds less than a year after winning the same amount in dollars on the Australian version of the show. The 100th episode was shown on 1 October 2000. The first millionaire winner finally happened after over 120 shows when on 20 November 2000 Judith Keppel from Fulham was the first UK contestant to win the jackpot. In 2001 there was a major scandal when Major Charles Ingram managed to cheat on the quiz show and "win" the million pound top prize using a series of cough signals from his wife and a friend in the audience, he was taken to court by Celador and didn't get to keep the prize money. WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE IS SEEN IN MANY MANY COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD INCLUDING:- The USA version is broadcast on ABC and is hosted by Regis Philbin (formerly stuck in daytime TV, the show has revitalised his career and is currently one of the most popular on US TV.) The Australian version is broadcast on Channel 9 and is hosted by Eddie McGuire. The Indian version (called Kaun Banega Crorepati?) is broadcast on Star Plus and is hosted by Amitahb Bachchan. The Irish version is shown twice weekly (from Autumn 2000) on RTE-Tyrone and is hosted by Gay Byrne. Thailand:- A Bangkok street vendor hit the jackpot on Thailand's version of the show - only to have it taken away from her. Lertlak Panchanawaporn had used up all three lifelines by the fifth question on the show before a wrongly plugged in cable led to the computer highlighting all the remaining 10 correct answers on her screen. From that point on she answered every question right, winning the million baht (£16,000) prize. The production team became suspicious and questioned her, leading to a reluctant confession. The second time round she won just £400.
WIN A JOB Hong Kong / ATV / x30m-e / 2002 Bizarre
game show in which jobless contestants took part in a "TV Showdown" to
win a position. New jobs were advertised at the end of each show and the
contestants had to go through the normal recruitment drills before the TV
appearance. WIN BEADLE'S MONEY C5 / 26x30m-e / 1999-2000 First Episode: 2 Aug 1999 Mondays 7.00pm Producer: Dave Morley Quiz fronted by Jeremy Beadle in which he put up a thousand pounds of his own money testing his general knowledge skills against that of the contestants. Richard Morton was co-host.
WIN LOSE OR DRAW UK / ITV / x30m-e / 1990's Morning quiz show featuring two teams of three (two celebrities and a member of the public) in a mock sitting room set up use their drawing skills to convey a phrase, TV Show, film etc. The three hosts of the show were Danny Baker then Shane Ritchie and then Bob Mills. All were pretty funny (even Shane Ritchie!) but Bob Mills was brilliant.
WINNER TAKES ALL UK / ITV (Yorkshire) / x30m-e / 1975-89 Mostly produced by Ian Bolt Early evening quiz show, most often around 7.00 or 7.30pm on a Friday, and hosted by Jimmy Tarbuck. The show had something of a gambling theme as the contestants would start with fifty pounds and then have to bet on the correct answer, so they might bet 10-1 on Jimmy wearing a pringle sweater for every show for example. Geoffrey Wheeler who acted as voice over man and actual question asker became host around the time of the shows final couple of series although Bobby Davro hosted the final series.
WIPE OUT UK / BBC1 / x30m-e / 25 May 1994- 2002 Quiz in which three contestants had to find the odd ones out in a number of given subjects. Originally shown Friday evenings prime time with Paul Daniels as quizmaster, the show was then hosted by Bob Monkhouse and formed part of BBC1's daytime schedule (shown @ 12 noon).

WORLDS STRONGEST MAN Annual competition from the late 1970's onward (usually won by someone from a Scandinavian country) to find a Samson amongst mortal men. For a brief period Britain's strongest man Geoff Capes was a real contender. The show is made by Transworld International and is seen in most European countries.

UK / London Weekend Television / x60m-e / 1988-96 Bizarre game show in which various contestants claimed to be able to perform various outlandish stunts or feats of memory or skilful tricks with the studio audience having to bet on whether the contenders would be successful. Original host was Bruce Forsyth then Matthew Kelly and finally Darren Day.
YOUR KIDS ARE IN CHARGE UK / BBC1 / x45m-e / 2000 8 July - Saturdays 6.00pm Series Producer: Marion Farrelly / Titles: Tarantula / Executive Producer: David Young Game show hosted by sisters Anthea Turner and Wendy Turner-Webster featuring two families competing in a series of challenges to win the star prize of a theme park holiday. Unusually it was the kids (as the title makes plain) who chose which member of the family was right for each challenge.
