AFTER HENRY SERIES THREE

Network DVD / Region 2 / Released 20 April 2009

Featuring Prunella Scales, Joan Sanderson, Janine Wood,

Sarah France, in her early 40's, is left widowed after her doctor husband is killed in a car crash, coping pretty well, she finds that most of her problems come from sharing a house with her aging mother and her daughter.

Network are currently releasing this enjoyable late 1980's sitcom and this month sees the arrival of it's third season. After Henry's plotline is kind of like a middle class female version of Only Fools and Horses, three generations of the same family trying to cope with their own worlds. The casting is brilliant and quite high brow for an ITV sitcom. The excellent Prunella Scales is Sarah (no stranger to sitcom of course having cut her teeth on it in the 1960's with The Marriage Lines and co-starring in the official best sitcom ever Fawlty Towers. Also taking a main role is the superb Joan Sanderson (who was also in an episode of FT) as Sarah's aging mother Eleanor and finally making up the trio is Janine Wood as 18 year old (at the beginning of the series anyway) daughter Clare. A nice twist here is that they have divided up the large Edwardian house they live in (owned by Sarah) is divided up into three separate flats, so, in theory anyway, the girls should not be constantly treading on each other toes.

Much of the humour is actually driven by Eleanor who is a dreadful gossip and likes to make sure she knows just what is going on in everyone's lives. Sarah works for bookshop owner Russell (Jonathan Newth) who is also her main confidant and provides a welcome respite from the vagaries of her home life.

Written by the excellent Simon Brett and based on his own radio series of the same name, After Henry is the kind of gentle, sweet and well acted sitcom that actually belies its gentleness to present some very clever dialogue and high quality performances. The two disc set features all 12 episodes from the third season as well as the Christmas special. Definitely worth seeking out.
