BONES OF THE HILLS by CONN IGGULDEN

Published by Harper Collins / NOvember 2008

The current best writer of historical action adventure releases the long awaited third volume in his genghis kahn Conqueror series. Bones of the Hills is a true epic and a majestic conclusion to the Genghis story (but not the Kahn series).

As the book starts Genghis is not as young as he was and his sons (who play a major part in the drama as it unfolds), Jochi, Chagatai and Ogedai are being groomed to take over the Khandom. Jochi is the natural successor, brave and intelligent in battle but the mighty Genghis is still unconvinced that Jochi is his real son and heavily favours Chagatai, in fact some of the strongest scenes involve the machinations between the warring brothers.

With the Chin brought to heel Genghis is beset by new friction from the west and is forced to do battle with the much stronger Arab nation led by Shah Ala- Ud-Din Mohammad; As Genghis travels ever further from his homeland the battles grow fiercer and the losses bigger but Genghis is determined to never be beaten.

Iggulden's pace never lets up from the first page with battle after bone crunching battle, piling on the tension and excitement but not always taking the obvious route either - not every main character will make through to the end of the book alive!

A stunningly entertaining read. Like the first two books in the series, Wolf of the Plains and Lords of the Bow, Bones of the Hills is definitely recommended as one of the key reads for the Christmas holidays.

Iggulden's previous quartet about Julius Caesar, the Emperor series, also available from Harper Collins, is another cracking read well worth seeking out.
