BOON - THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON

Network DVD / Region 2 / Released 13 April 2009

Featuring Michael Elphick, David Daker, Neil Morrissey, Lesley-Anne Sharpe

I'd forgotten just what an enjoyable show Boon was, with its excellent Jim Diamond, melancholic tinged, theme tune (Hi Ho Silver reached Number 5 in the charts back in 1986) setting the tone nicely. Season two is just released by Network in a four disc set and it is this season that really set the standard for Boon. In the first season Ken had just been coasting along after leaving the fire brigade, taking on all manner of sometimes quite odd jobs. Season two brings in a proper base for Ken as he sets up operations with his own dispatch courier company The Texas Rangers. Still on board is good friend and fellow ex-fireman (turned big businessman) Harry Crawford, who has moved up in the world from the hotel he ran in the first season now running The Coaching Inn over at Edgbaston (lucky for Ken though it's big enough to also house the Rangers offices).

This season also heralds the arrival of two big main stays of the series in the shape of Neil Morrissey's niave Rocky Cassidy and young Debbie Yates (Lesley-Anne Sharpe). Rocky, in the season opener, is initially working for a rival courier firm, but unhappy with the way they are trying to muscle Ken out of business he ends up joining him. Debbie meanwhile is working for Harry in the hotel but quickly drifts over to helping Ken run his office.

It's an entertaining show with lots of Minder style plots, a high humour quotient and a great atmosphere generated by the cast. There are some good guest stars too including the likes of Diane Keen as a wannabe crusading TV journalist, Anthony Head, Phyllis Calvert, Michael Medwin, Pamela Salem and Amanda Burton as Detective Sergeant Margaret Daly who plays a pivotal part in the exciting final episode of the season which sees both Ken and Harry being held hostage by old fire colleague who is somewhat mentally unstable.

Boon is a series that still stand up well today and is certainly worth seeking out.
