Dalziel And Pascoe Season One
Roadshow / 2 disc set / 270 minutes / no extras
cast
Warren Clarke, Colin Buchanan
Warren Clarke was quite probably born to play the bluff, take no nonsense northern detective superintendent Andy Dalziel and this surprisingly highbrow first season does well in capturing the very essence of Reginald Hill’s original novels. Dalziel (pronounced De-Al) at the series opening is partnered with new sergeant Peter Pascoe who supplies empathy and understanding where Dalziel is all obnoxious behavior.
This first season features three feature length stories, two of them written by Alan Plater and the other by Malcolm Bradbury, legendary writers both, which gives you some indication of the level the BBC were hoping to reach. The series is like a cross between Inspector Morse and A Touch of Frost and thoroughly touches all the right settle down with a great mystery buttons. This first season also has some top quality guest stars in the shape of the gorgeous Francesca Annis as an old love of Dalziel’s and the wonderful Prunella Scales.
Still going strong after 11 years Dalziel and Pascoe is a quality series and this new Roadshow release affords a great opportunity to re-aquaint yourselves with the beginnings of the series.
Trivia: dodgy comedians Hale and Pace had made a previous (and most people agree distastrous) attempt to bring Dalziel and Pascoe to the screen a couple of years earlier.
