DEAR FATTY by DAWN FRENCH

The ever so lovely Dawn French may just have written one of the funniest and most poignant books of the year with her new memoir Dear Fatty. Using the device of writing letters to her family and friends as a way of telling her life story, Dawn ends up being unexpectedly revealing in the process.

One of the key figures in Dawn's life was her troubled father who despite telling Dawn how beautiful she was each and every day was struggling to cope with life and committed suicide when Dawn was 19, something she doesn't shy away from talking about and there are many letters to her father scattered throughout the book, telling him key things he missed fom her life. She also writes to her daughter Billie, her husband Lenny, former lovers, celebrity crushes and most of all, her life long friend and co-writer/performer Jennifer Saunders (who is actually the Dear Fatty of the books title).

It's a clever idea actually, almost as if she is allowing you to eavesdrop on personal conversations, some of the most heartwarming sections of the book deal with her relationship with her husband Lenny Henry, they have been together since the early 1980's and despite the odd up and down (all reported in the tabloids natch), much like any relationship really, they are clearly still very much in love.

Frenchy has had such a great career and is already much loved but in a nutshell Dear Fatty will make you like Dawn even more than you did before!
