Distributor: Roadshow Home Entertainment
Certificate: E | region 4

His name still a by word for horror and ruthlessness Genghis Khan was the leader of the Mongols and sovereign over the biggest empire ever ruled by a single man. Hevaily based on The Secret History of the Mongols (which is really the only period written account on Genghis) this truly fascinating dramatised documentary tells the story of this notorious yet enigmatic ruler.

Genghis Khan was really Temudjin a feared warrior who rose to control a territory larger than the Roman Empire. This accomplished strategist ruled using a mixture of fear and respect.

Like King Arthur there are many stories surrounding Genghis’s earliest days, supposedly starting out on his conquesting career at the age of 16 when his young wife was kidnapped by the rival Merkit tribe and Genghis mounted a rescue party to save her, around this time two of his generals Jelme and Borchu joined him. Initially Genghis opponents were the Naimans to the west, the Merkits to the north and the Tatars to the east but with canny battle plans and the right alliances Khan was soon leader of them all.

From there it was but a short step towards the expansion of the Mongol empire.

This informative and watchable DVD from Roadhsow/SBS makes plain how highly Khan valued loyalty, he placed a huge amount of trust in his generals which in turn bound them to him. Everyone has heard but not many actually know much about him, this DVD is a great primer for sure.
