HADLEIGH - THE COMPLETE THIRD SERIES
Network DVD / Released 19 January 2009 in a four disc
set.
Featuring Gerald Harper, Nigel Hawthorne, Brian Blessed, Hilary Dwyer
Hugely popular when it was first screened, Hadleigh, starring the debonair Gerald Harper as the Yorkshire squire of the title, has just had all 13 episodes of its third season just released by Network. Having grown out of a 1968 series called Gazette, the show sees James Hadleigh trying to revitalise his country estate Melford Hall. This third series sees him gearing up for marriage to the forthright Jennifer Caldwell (played by Hilary Dwyer).
Made for Yorkshire TV Hadleigh is a strong drama series, very typical of the 1970's, strong plotting and time for storylines to unroll naturally unlike todays fast cut, music led dramas that don't allow you to think. Key plot points in the season include Hadleigh and Jennifer getting to grips with married life, including a major argument mid way through the run, the heart of the matter being that there is always something more important in Hadleigh's life than anything else - Medford Hall. Jennifer's father Charlie also has quite a few run ins with Hadleigh. Quite a few of the storylines are almost stand alone episodes, with a few continuing threads peppered through them, such as Hadleigh and Jennifer wandering about the activities of their mysterious manservant and Hadleigh trying to help out hi god-daughter who is having problems at school.
It's an entertaining series and one you can quickly get caught up in, fans of the show first time out will find much to enjoy and re-aquaint themselves with and newcomers will
find this a positive viewing experience.
