LINKSHADLEIGH - THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON
Network DVD / Region 2 / Released 6 April 2009
Featuring Gerald Harper, Gordon Jackson
Well to do James Hadleigh was one of the smoothest people on television in the 1970's, even giving Jason King a run for his money in the urbane stakes. A lot of that was down to the fact that Gerald Harper (who played the wealthy landowner) was a bit like that in real life. Network are releasing the series on DVD and this month sees the arrival of the fourth and final season.
Growing out of an earlier series called Gazette, the show focuses on James Hadleigh after he inherits Melford Hall and its large and busy estate. Over the course of the series Hadleigh learns how to run the estate, gets married to the beautiful but feisty Jennifer and generally does his best to turn Melford Hall into a profitable concern. The four disc set features all 13 episodes from the season and its a time of enormous change for Hadleigh, not only is his marriage on the verge of collapse, Jennifer spends much of the season in the United States (Hilary Dwyer who played Jennifer had clearly either been unavaible or unwilling to commit to this season) and it almost looks like Hadleigh could even lose the estate itself. Other key plot lines see James paying a visit to Hong Kong to sell a diamond and also a film company taking over the Hall.
There are some great guest stars popping up in this season includes the likes of Gordon Jackson, Stephanie Beacham, Michael Elphick and Peter Sallis. There are some high quality extras too, not least in the shape of a brand new documentary, The Lonely Man on the Hill, with contributions from cast and crew. An audio commentary on the final episode Broke from Gerald Harper and producer Jacky Stoller. There is a PDF look at the making of the series.
I do think ITV should think about bringing this series back with Bill Nighy as Hadleigh. In the meantime these not to be missed DVD releases will more than fit the bill.
