LINKSJOHN STEINBECK'S EAST OF EDEN
Acorn Media US / Region 1 / March 3, 2009
Featuring Lloyd Bridges, Timothy Bottoms, Jane Seymour, Bruce Boxleitner, Warren Oates
Considered by Steinbeck himself to be the novel of his that will stand the test of time the longest, East of Eden is a classic, sweeping saga brought vividly to life in this early 1980's mini series.
Lavish of production design, big of budget and with an all star cast, EOE tracs through American history from the days of the civil war to the horrors of world war one focuses on the Trask family led by the take no nonsense Cyrus (the superb Warren Oates). At the heart of the story though are brothers Adam and Charles (played by Timothy Bottoms and Bruce Boxleitner) whose long running fued spills over into the lives of their own children (one of whom is Timothy Bottoms' real life son Sam). Wandering through it all is Jane Seymours manipulative Kate. Seymour is at her most beautiful here, her imperiousness and manner making her the key character in the drama, certainly deserving of her best actress Golden Globe.
This three disc set features all six hours of this marvellous series and whilst the mid 1950's version will always have its fans, thanks to its James Dean starring role, it is this version that retains the essence of Steinbeck's work. The extra length allows enough time for the story to unfold at a proper pace too. If you've only heard about how good this production is then stack up on the munchies and settle yourself in for a couple of nights of drama at its best.
Extras are good too and feature a new interview with Jane Seymour, a bio of Steinbeck and cast filmographies.
