PERFECT NIGHT by PETER GRIMSDALE
Published by Orion / Released October 2008
Peter Grimsdale, a former TV journalist and executive, makes his impressive debut as a novelist with the arrival of Perfect Night. With a fast paced story of RObert Goddard-esque proportions, Perfect Night begins in 1995 with Nick Roker, an ambitious TV documentary maker getting the chance of a lifetime with an assignment in Sri Lanka, where he gets to not only interview a leading terrorist but also sharing a night of passion with his gorgeous presenter Greer. The next morning though an explosion on a boat kills not the terrorist and his presenter but also leaves Nick himself on the very edge.
Some years later Nick is still in denial about the accident and trying to keep a low profile with a job in film archive company, following a take over, Roker finds himself out of a job, in a fit of pique he takes with him a vital piece of film that, as far as he believes, contains footage of Greer, it also contains a single frame of film of a man who is supposed to be dead, as Nick begins to realise just what he has been hiding from himself since the fateful accident, he also realises that he has set in a chain an unstoppable force that puts not only his life in mortal danger but that of his friends too. In fact for Nick to get to the heart of the matter he may have to return to the very spot of the Sri Lankan tragedy that changed his life forever.
A thrillingly good read that certainly doesn't come across like a first novel. Given Grimsdale's TV past the details about Nick's past on a World in Action or This Week style investigative show certainly ring true and as the story progresses he throws in more than enough twists and turns to keep you well hooked.
