PLAY DEAD by RICHARD MONTANARI
Published by Harper Collins | October 2008
Published by William Heinemann
Richard Montanari is fast gaining a reputation as a thriller writer par excellence, his latest, Play Dead - which is the fourth to feature Philiadelphia detectives Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano, is without question his most entertaining yet.
In it, Byrne and Balzano have been assigned to the Cold Case department and their first case is one of their most chilling (and it has to be said, gruesome) yet. The murder of a young girl who was left as a kind of message, Byrne and Balzano soon discover that this well may be just the first victim of many. As they dig further they find not only the body count rising but the fact that their killer is playing decidedly deadly games with them.
The pace is sharp, the dialogue sharper and with more than one hairs on the back of the neck raising moment, Play Dead pushes all the right buttons. Highly suspenseful and with a great dynamic between the two leads, easy to see why he has returned to them again here. Montanari also has that great knack of bringing a city to life and you do feel as if you are walking the streets of Philadelphia (to get all Bruce Springsteen like) with Balzano and Byrne.
Be warned though, this is not a book for the feint of heart, the bad guy is a killer of Hannibal Lecter
style proportions! It is a book that is highly readable though, don't miss it!
