PRICELESS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW
Acorn Media UK / Region 2 / Released October 5, 2009The Antiques Roadshow has been on our TV screens for over 30 years now, having begun back in February 1979. This excellent new three disc set, which is presented by the shows current host Fiona Bruce, brings together a veritable treasure trove of classic moments from the series long history.
AR has always worked on a couple of levels, on the one side you are drawn into the sheer drama of whether that priceless Faberge egg is the genuine article and is it really going to be worth a fortune and on the other it stirs up notions that amongst your own stuff there is hiding that undiscovered gem that has languished in your sock drawer ever since you inherited it from your Great Aunt Ethel.
The other major plus point in watching these vintage slices of the show again is in seeing how much more attuned we've all become to spotting a find or two. When the show first began there was far more emphasis on genuine antiques but over the last few years there has been a marked rise in the popularity and collectability of more recent 20th century pop culture artefacts and that has been reflected in the kind of items featured on the show.
With contributions from experts across the years and former hosts Hugh Scully and Michael Aspel, this 3 disc set is a fab celebration of a classic Sunday afternoon comfort show that even after 3 decades shows no signs of wearing out its welcome.
