LINKSSATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS OF THE 1960'S VOLUME ONE
Warner Home Video / Region 1 / Released May 26, 2009
One of the great delights (amongst many) about having children is being able to introduce them to the shows you watched as a child, which is why we need to all hail the wonderous folks at Warner who have put together a rather delicious two disc compilation of some of the best loved cartoons of the 1960's (a companion volume on the 1970's is also out this month.
It's a good mix that includes some legendary shows, Top Cat, The Jetsons and The Flintstones to name just three, as well as a selection that haven't been seen in an age with the likes of Winsome Witch and The Peter Potamus Show. This is good as it gives us the opportunity to revisit some of the more obscure shows and at the same time maybe test the water to see whether a full series release is worth it.
The set opens up with a slice of classic Top Cat and one of the best episodes from that fab series, like all the best Top Cat scenarios, he never actually comes off best and in The Tycoon he accidentally gives up the chance to get hold of a million dollars legitimately. Meanwhile three shorter length shows pop up next with Atom Ant (very quickly grabbed my 6 year old scifi loving sons attention), the less well known Precious Pupp and The Hillbilly Bears all making an appearance. I'd never seen the HB's before but it's a fun episode in which they are out smarted by a woodpecker!
Next up is The Peter Potamus Show (and its attendant segments Breezly and Sneezly & Yippee, Yappee and Yahooey). There are not too many cartoons featuring Purple hippos and in this episode Peter and his ape pal So So tangle with a giant escapee from Jack and the Beanstalk. Breezly and Sneezly offers up a slightly surreal tale featuring the Polar Bear and Seal, whilst the three Y's are a trio of dogs guarding the King.
When I was a kid Secret Squirrel was a big fave, as was his sidekick, the Peter Lorre soundalike Morocco Mole and in the episode here, the pair investigate when a submarine goes missing. Other shows include Winsome Witch, Squiddly Diddly, An episode of The Flintstones in which Wilma and Betty decide to get jobs, The Porky Pig Show, a Daffy Duck cartoon and Quick Draw McGraw. And that's all on disc one!
Disc two has The Jetsons classic first episode Rosey the Robot, the exciting Marine Boy, more scifi and fantasy with Space Ghost and Dino Boy. The Herculoids is also scifi and focuses on the king of the planet Quasar and his family who are busy defending their planet from would be alien usurpers. There is also a double bill featuring Frankenstein Jr and The Impossibles and the finale features the legendary Magilla Gorilla.
There are stacks of extras too including a couple of vintage featurettes looking at the world of saturday morning cartoons as well as a featurette on the genius of Hanna Barbara, a couple of features looking at The Herculoids and Frankenstein Jr & The Impossibles. There are also a couple of bonus cartoons featuring Quick Draw McGraw and Augie Doggie.
All in all it's a brilliant blast of pop culture nostalgia that serves both old fans and new ones equally as well. Watch, enjoy and be transported back to a simpler, less complicated time.
