Shooter
Paramount / 121 minutes / reg 4 / extras / MA15+
Mark Wahlberg, Danny Glover, Kate Mara, Elias Koteas, Rhona Mitra, Levon Helm
Bob Lee Swagger is a world class sniper, a Marine who walks away from it all when an operation goes wrong and his partner is killed, 3 years later a secret service agent (Danny Glover) who tells him of a plot to assassinate the US President and persuades him that only he has the knowledge to prevent it. Swagger though is double crossed, the real target is the Archbishop of Ethiopia and he is in the frame for it. Managing to escape Swagger goes on the run determined to get to the heart of the conspiracy.
Director Antoine Fuqua, who also served up Training Day, brings us another high octane, action packed, shoot em up fest. The movie manages to mix in elements of Transporter/Bourne Identity action with Rambo war mongering as the bodies pile up the further into the conspiracy that Swagger gets. Shooter is an entertaining movie but definitely earns its MA15+ rating. Danny Glover makes a great baddie and Wahlberg can play this type of gung ho action hero in his sleep.
Pretty much the definition of a Friday night flick.
Extras are an audio commentary from the director, a making of featurette and deleted scenes.
