LINKSSTOP MESSING ABOUT
A review by Catherine Balavage
Showing nightly at The Leicester Square Theatre, London until the 24 May 2009
For all of its repression and stiff upper lip Britain has always had its smutty, dirty side. Encapsulated in the sense of humour of the 'Carry On' films. Keeping this in mind. I was expecting the worse from this show. I am not a fan of Kenneth Williams. I also have never seen a 'Carry On' film, deliberately. Despite this fact I enjoyed the show.
The actors are strong and the set is impressive. I am too young to know anything about 'Stop Messing about.' A radio show from the 1970's starring Kenneth Williams and Joan Sims. Despite this I managed to get a grip on what was going on. I loved the nostalgia even though it was a time I had never known. Though, I have to admit. I didn't 'get' all of the sketches. It is a different type of humour from my own.
I laughed at quite a few of the sketches even though and the classic line 'Infamy, infamy. They all have it in for me' was in there twice. Once was enough!
Robin Sebastian is spot on as Kenneth Williams. He has that nasal whine down pat. There is strong support from Nigel Harrison as Hugh Paddick and Charles Armstrong as the BBC Announcer Douglas Smith. It was quite a shock when I realized that the Emma Atkins playing Joan Sims was the same actress who has been playing Charity in Emmerdale. She is an outstanding talent and I predict even bigger things for her.
This show is well directed by Michael Kingsbury and whilst it is not perfect but it is a good night out.
Three stars!
