TAGGART SET 1

Acorn Media US / Region 1 / March 24, 2009

Featuring Alex Norton, John Michie, Blythe Duff

One of the longest running UK crime dramas is now available to US tec tv fans. This new release from Acorn features all 7 episodes from the 2002 series, an era of change for the show but regarded by fans as being amongst the best since the glory days of the earliest episodes.

Taggart, created by Glenn Chandler, actually began way back in 1983 with the much missed Mark McManus as Detective Chief Inspector Jim Taggart. The series back then was different too, mostly shot on video with three or four episodes to a story with seedy goings on in the tenements of Glasgow. After McManus died it looked like that would be the end of the show but so popular was it that it continued and actually got better. New faces came and went but always constant were DCI Mike Jardine (James McPherson eventually left the series just before the episodes featured here) and Jackie Reid (Blythe Duff).

In this series Reid is joined by newcomer DCI Matt Burke (the very good actor Alex Norton) and also on the team is young cop DC Stuart Fraser (Colin McCredie). Taggart is such a good, strong show, offering up a less rose tinted view of Scotland which all too often is shown as some picturesque highland idyll and whilst it does deal with usually murderous themes it does retain quite a streak of black humour that gives it a realistic tone.
