Patrick Jane isn't crazy but he is a mentalist in the proper truest sense of the word that is. A mentalist is someone with extremely heightened skills on body language and observation. In the Victorian era psychologists were often also known as Mentalists, here Jane (superbly played by Australian Simon Baker) is a celebrity psychic who renounces his earlier life, admitting his act was faked when his wife and child are murdered by a serial killer who goes by the name of Red John.
Trying to rebuild his shattered life Patrick teams up with the police to bring killers and bad guys to justice whilst at the same time embarking on a very personal quest to track down Red John and make him pay! The Mentalist is one of the strongest new series to emerge for some time, James' skills at assessing peoples behavior make him a strong central character and Baker sparks well of his supporting cast not least Robin Tunney as Teresa Lisbon.
An enjoyable variation on your standard crime drama format, this season one box set also includes unaired scenes from three of the key episodes of the season, a gag reel, a featurette looking at the making of the series and a featurette examining psychic skills vs mentalist skills.
