THE WALTONS - THE COMPLETE 8TH SEASON

Warner Home Video / Released 6 January 2009

Featuring Miss Michael Learned, Ralph Waite, Ellen Corby, Judy Nortoon-Taylor, Jon Walmsley

Our favourite comfort show has its penultimate season released on DVD this month in a 3 disc double sided set by Warner and its a season of pulling together in the face of adversity and realisation that family is the key ingredient that builds a life together.

The depressed air of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Jefferson County, Virginia is the place the Walton family call home. Starting in the early 1930's when a massive recession had laid everybody low and times were hard indeed, the series very quickly became a massive success all over the world, thanks to its homely stories and harking back to a more innocent time.

By the beginning of this 8th season things have definitely moved on - the second world war is in full swing and eldest son John Boy is working in the thick of the action as a war correspondent and when the family receive a dreaded telegram declaring him missing in action it looks like the family may have to face up to the fact that he could be dead. Other big plotlines this season see the return of matriarch Olivia, home finally from the TB clinic and Ben and Cindy bringing yet another Walton into the world, meanwhile Cousin Rose and her grandchildren manage to make the Walton household lively and full of spirit once more.

As always The Waltons offers up quality viewing indeed, there is just something so right about watching the show, especially so today in these uncertain times we live in. Definitely recommended.

Extras on the set come in the shape of the excellent special A Waltons Retrospective, the excellent look back on the series that aired directly at the end of the 8th season, it features the increasingly frail but very gorgeous Grandma Walton looking through a photo album which then become clips from the show.
