LINKSTRIAL AND RETRIBUTION SET 2
Acorn Media US / Region 1 / 3 March 2009
Featuring David Hayman, Kate Buffery, Charles Dance, Simon Callow
When it comes to crime drama just the mention of the name Lynda La Plante is enough to give you that little frisson of expectation. The former actress switched to writing in the early 1980's and hit it big straightaway with Widows (her tale of bank robbers wives turning tables and pulling off the crime themselves) and then really going on to make an impression with the creation of Prime Suspect.
Trial and Retribution is her current biggie and Acorn have just released set 2 which includes four two parters (comprising stories 5-8). The series follows the hard hitting investigations of DCI Mike Walker (Hayman) and his partner Detective Inspector North (Buffery - who departs after the second episode). Newcomer to the show from story 7 is Victoria Smurfitt's DCI Roison Connor who of course goes on to have a major presence on the show.
Like the title of the series suggests the cases are followed right through from initial investigation to the court case and final verdict. It's all very stylish too with much use of split screens (sometimes as many as four) to move the action forward. La Plante's name has always attracted high profile names to her series and guest stars on this set include such notables as the brilliant Simon Callow, super smooth Charles Dance, Tim McInnerny and the old Duchess of Duke Street herself Gemma Jones.
Top quality crime drama, more brutal than Midsomer Murders but easily its equal in the entertainment stakes.
