LINKSWATCHING COMPLETE THIRD SEASON

Written by Jim Hitchmough, Watching was one of ITV's most watched sitcoms of the late 80's and early 90's, starring Emma Wray as the short and feisty Brenda Wilson, a working class scouser and proud of it, the show follows the relationship that develops when she meets tall, middle class birdwatching Malcolm Stoneway. Of course Malcolm's mother Mrs Stoneway is none too happy about his burgeoning relationship with Brenda and Brenda's mouthy sister (an excellent early role for Liza Tarbuck) also disapproves of the match.
This third series, which opens with the hour long 1988 Christmas special (the ITV powers that be clearly thought a lot of the show as it was not every show that garnered its own festive edition), is still about developing the romance between the Brenda and Malcolm (both of whom seem to take two steps back for every three steps forward). In the special, Twitching, the couple go on a camping trip whilst other episodes revolve around Malcolm starting his own business - a motorcycle repair shop and Brenda's sister Pamela gearing up for her wedding day.
Watching, like Rising Damp before it, actually started out life as a stage play. Show creator Hitchmough is a great writer (he honed his teeth on shows such as Not the Nine O'Clock News) and packs in lots of witty dialogue into each half hour. If you remember the show from first time around then you'll want to re-aquaint yourself with it and if it is a show you've yet to see then it is definitely recommended.
