WILL SHAKESPEARE THE COMPLETE SERIES

Network DVD / Region 2 / Released 4 May 2009

Featuring Tim Curry, Ian McShane

The legendary John (Rumpole of the Bailey) Mortimer took a break from the bar in the late seventies to bring us the supremely entertaining Will Shakespeare. The six parter (which originally aired in 1978) stars Tim Curry as Shakespeare and focuses heavily on his time in London and the writing of his plays to be performed at the Globe Theatre.

Will, as he is here (definitely not William) very quickly makes his mark as a playwright of note and is soon one of the most famous people in the country. Dallying with Queen Elizabeth and getting involved in a rivalry with fellow playwright Christopher Marlowe (played by Ian McShane). The period when Shakespeare was in his prime is vividly brought to life by both Mortimer and his talented cast, which also includes Andre Morrell, Nicholas Clay and Simon MacCorkindale.

Cleverly, Mortimer bases each episode around the writing of one of Shakespeare's key players but is also canny enough to keep the playing modern enough to hook in the casual viewer. Will Shakespeare was probably a bit ahead of its time on its original release at time when people were still quite used to seeing stagey TV versions of his plays but Today's post Blackadder, post Shakespeare in Love world will definitely find much to enjoy here.

If you are unfamiliar with this series then we wouldn't hesitate in suggesting that you check it out.
