WITHIN THESE WALLS - THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON

Network DVD / Region 2 / Released 6 April 2009

Featuring Googie Withers, Jerome Willis, Mona Bruce, Denys Hawthorne

The women in prison genre has always been a popular genre, whether it be the exploitation movie or the over the top antics of Prisoner Cell Block H and Bad Girls. The best example though is the superb Within These Walls, the mid 1970's ITV drama that starred Googie Withers as Faye Boswell, governors of HMP Stone Park. Network this month bring us the second season in a four disc set.

Unlike most examples of the genre Within These Walls focuses as much on the staff running Stone Park as the inmates. Faye Boswell has quite a progressive attitude and is keen to institute change within the prison, her chief officer Mrs Armitage (the excellent Mona Bruce) would prefer to keep things the way they are. Stories are generally low key and often concern a new arrival (the perfect way to bring a guest star in of course and there are appearances from the likes of Joan Benham, Jill Gascoine, Lynda Bellingham, Floella Benjamin, Sherrie Hewson, Michael Culver and Shirley "Angels" Cheriton to name just a few). It's a brilliant series though, strong on drama and highly watchable. Googie Withers is one of the great ladies of the golden age of British cinema and she is a very commanding presence.

There were 13 episodes made for the second season but unfortunately episode three, Nowhere For Kids, has been completely lost. Network though have managed to give us a sense of completion by presenting the script of the episode in PDF format.

This series definitely fulfills all of the criteria for classic TV and remains essential viewing.
