WYCLIFFE SERIES FIVE

Time Life / Region 4 / Out Now

Featuring Jack Shepherd, Helen Masters,

Time Life bring their releases of this excellent low key crime drama to a close with the arrival of Wycliffe's fifth and final season. Based on the long running series of novels by W.J. Burley, Wycliffe sees Jack Shepherd as the titular detective Superintendant Charles Wycliffe investigating murder and skullduggery on the Cornish coast.

Unlike say a series like Midsomer Murders, Wycliffe has a more natural and realistic feel that will just as often focus on the political shenanigans with the police force, in fact Wycliffe often feels he is being undermined at every turn. In fact one of the big threads that runs through this fifth season is an allegation of corruption directed at Wycliffe himself.

Happily this set also includes the feature length special, Dance of the Scorpions, which was made between series four and five. In this Wycliffe is shot and almost killed. This, naturally enough, is something that hits him hard and impacts on the rest of the series. Another big development this season is the pregnancy of Wycliffe's second in command, D.I. Lane (Helen Masters was pregnant in real life).

It's highly likely that this entertaining show would have continued for at least another couple of seasons but for the fact that series co-star Jimmy Yuill fell seriously ill with meningitis and then wasn't allowed back by the company making the show once he had recovered. This caused such bad feeling amongst cast and crew that star Shepherd pulled out of the series altogether leaving ITV with little option but to cancel it.

Still it does mean that collecting the whole run of episodes is that much easier! For any fan of intelligent crime drama Wycliffe is highly recommended.
