the most watched show on the planet, if you
haven't seen friends where have you been hiding.
The basic premise of this sitcom details
episodes in the lives of six friends living in
New York. The six were Rachel, who as the series
began had walked out on her husband to be on
their wedding day and moved in with her best
friend, the highly strung Monica, the other
female of the six was the dopey Phoebe. Three
men made up the six, wisecracking Chandler, his
room mate Joey and Monica's brother Ross. Monica
and Rachel lived opposite Chandler and Joey in
an apartment block, much of the action was set
either in these apartment blocks or the cafe
they would all frequent "Central
Perk".
Ross was a divorced palaeontologist with a major
crush on Rachel, Rachel initially got a job
working at Central Perk where Gunther the
manager worshipped her from afar. Monica was a
cook, Phoebe was all new age stuff and played
guitar in Central Perk whilst Chandler worked in
an office and Joey was a mostly out of work
actor.
As the show progressed Rachel got a job in an
office, Joey got and then lost a job on a
daytime soap whilst Ross fell for the English
Emily only to say "I take thee,
Rachel" during their marriage ceremony
(their marriage was pretty short lived as Helen
Baxendale wouldn't commit to staying in the USA
for any length of time because she had just had
a child, Patsy Kensit was initially first choice
for this role).
The most important developments over the last
couple of seasons have been Chandler and Monica
falling deeply in love and getting married and
Rachel having a brief fling with Ross and
getting pregnant but not being prepared to marry
him.
The show has attracted some of the biggest names
in movies in guest star roles among the likes of
Brad Pitt (Aniston's real life husband), Billy
Crystal, Robin Williams, George Clooney and
Julia Roberts. Monica and Ross's dad is played
by Elliott Gould and for quite some time Monica
was involved in a relationship with an older man
played by Tom Selleck.
The six stars are payed a fortune for each
episode and each season is touted as being the
last season however with the whole group now
breaking into films in a big way it looks like
the show will actually end pretty soon.
