Guiding Light

USA / CBS / x15m-e  x30m-e and later x60m-e / 1952-continuing

Creators: Irna Phillips, Emmons Carlson / Music: Shawn K. Clement, Ron Cohen, Art Phillips, the organ theme used for the show was discontinued around 1973.

Soap opera/drama series. TV's longest running soap, stories of everyday American family The Bauers. The light of the title originally referred to the friendship lantern found in the window of the house of the Rev John Ruthledge, now it refers to a lighthouse owned by the Bauer family. Charita Bauer played the lead role of family matriarch Bert Bauer for 35 years, although this is not a record (see Coronation Street with William Roache playing Ken Barlow for forty years and still going strong.) From 1952 until the late sixties episode of the show were only fifteen minutes long it then went to 30 minutes. The show began broadcasting in colour in March 1967. From 1977 the show was actually known as Guiding Light (dropping the 'The' from the title.  During its 'emmy' years the show featured an Emmy statue in its closing credits.
A new opening premiered in June 2002. It lasted for about 8 months. Recently, under John Conboy (who replaced Paul
Rauch as EP), another new opening premiered. Now the opening is at the beginning of the show and no longer has any logo (of which to speak). Video clips move from left to right and the title also goes from L to R. The last shot of the opening is a transition to the first act of the show. For the early years, Rosa Rio was the
organist, until about 1967 (when TGL went to color). John Gart
served as organist until about 1970. The late, great Charles Paul
took over (contributing his own theme) until about 1975.
