Sitcom. The exploits of a trio of eccentric O.A.P.'s in rural Yorkshire. Started out as a comedy playhouse entry and the show is Britain's longest running situation comedy. The trio has changed over the years but Peter Sallis as Clegg as been a constant as was Bill Owen as Compo for 26 years until his death. Clegg seemed permanently worried and Compo spent most of his time lusting after the wrinkled stockinged Goddess (at least in Compo's eyes) Nora Batty .The third of the trio changed occasionally but was always a bumptious military type (most notably Foggy Dewhurst). There was a prequel called First of the Summer Wine.

Season three followed a serial format focusing on one particular character for each episode with them all coming together in a climactic finale. Special: - BBC2 / 1x60m-e / 2000 (Wednesday 27 December 9.40pm), this Christmas Special saw Royston Vasey Vicar Bernice Woodall listening to three gruesome stories. The girls changed over the years with Dawn being replaced by Sandra at the start of season two, then Beryl leaving at the end of Season four being replaced by Carol, when Carol arrived much play was made of the comic antics of various members of her family. The first season consisted of only four episodes and the uncredited script editor was Eric Idle. See also the brief lacklustre 1996 revival also called The Liver Birds.

Highly un-pc sitcom. Bigoted factory worker Eddie Booth's life is hit for six when a black couple, the Reynolds, move in next door to him. This show was controversial in its day and is even more so now. Its unlikely to be seen on terrestrial TV again although satellite channel UK Gold has shown 'selected episodes'. In 1980 Jack Smethurst made seven episodes of the show for Australian TV  these were broadcast by ITV between September and December of 1982. There was also a USA version called Love Thy Neighbor
