PARKINSON

UK / BBC1 / 361x45m-e(70's-80's) / 1971-82 / 1998-continuing

Popular chat with Michael Parkinson talking to all the greats. 'Parky' was brought back by popular demand in 1998. The guests on the very first show were tennis player Arthur Ashe, actor Terry-Thomas and paparazzo Roy Bellisario.  In 2004 Parkinson moved to ITV (starting 4 September). Nothing much changed though - it had the same format, same set design and even kept the same signature tune.
During the late 1970's Parkinson took his chat show to Australia for a couple of seasons. See full entry for that in the Australian section.

Occasional shows in which Richard Whiteley talks to three guests, the twist being that he doesn't know who is appearing until they walk on the set and even then is not too sure who they are.2 editions so far  1. 29 May 1999 Sat 11.15pm / 2. 19 Nov Fri 10.25pm 

 

ROOM 101

Comedy chat in which various celebrities pick out the items they would like to see disappear from the world and be consigned to Room 101 (Room 101 of course featured in George Orwell's classic novel 1984). Originally presented by Nick Hancock and from 1999 by Paul Merton.

A football based debate show.

 

RUBY

Thrice weekly round the dinner table chat show presided over by Ruby Wax, her guests were mainly of the arty, filmy booky type.

 

RUBY WAX MEETS...

UK / BBC1 / 8x50m-e / 1996-

Comedy chat show. Ruby Wax visits various high profile celebrities (Goldie Hawn, Pamela Anderson, Sarah Ferguson, Imelda Marcos and Sandra Bullock amongst others) and uses her 'skills' to provide us with an insight into their lives.

 

SARAH..SURVIVING LIFE

UK / Sky One / 1998

Bizarre talk show with the Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson trying her best to relate to ordinary members of the public.

 

SATURDAY ZOO

UK / Channel Four-Channel X / 13x60m-e / 1993 16 January - 10 April

Jonathan Ross hosted chat and comedy show, the main to claim of which was launching the characters of Paul and Pauline Calf (both played by Steve Coogan) on an unprepared public.

 

THE SHOW

UK / Channel Four / 6x60m-e / 1990's

A kind of attempt to make a real life Larry Sanders with chat show host Bob Mills being shown preparing his show behind the scenes interspersed with the actual show itself.

 

THE FRANK SKINNER SHOW

UK / BBC1 / 18x30m-e / 1996-99 and 2002

Producer: John McHugh

A chat show hosted by Black Country comedian Frank Skinner, with the show being notable for the number of guests who came on half cut or out of it (such as Erica Roe and Tara Palmer Tompkinson). On 26 January 2002 there was a special where Frank Skinner interviewed Britney Spears who was making her first UK chat show appearance.

 

SO GRAHAM NORTON

Often bizarre and often funny chat show hosted by Graham Norton. Graham often subjected his guests  to the wonders of the internet and some of the stranger items to be found on it. Season Three: 10 Episodes 21 January - 24 March Fridays 10.30pm

Comedy chat show hosted by ventriloquist David Strassman and his foul mouthed puppets Chuck Wood and Ted E. Bare. 

 

THAT REMINDS ME 

USA / ABC / x30m-e / August 13, 1948 - October 1, 1948

This was simply a storytelling session with newsman Walter Kiernan joined by ex-New Jersey Governor Harold Hoffman and "Uncle Jim" Harkins. The stories were generally about humorous incidents in the lives of famous people, and members of the celebrity's family were often on hand to embellish the tales. It
seemed like a good idea for TV in 1948. Host was Walter Kiernan and regulars included Governor Harold Hoffman and "Uncle Jim" Harkins.

TOMBOLA

Spain / Telemadrid / 200 episodes of varying length / 1997-2001

Often outrageous mix of debate, talk and just plain gossip, the show would sometimes last for several hours (often as many as five in fact) and much of the material centered on the private lives of various Spanish celebs and the like.

 

TONIGHT WITH JONATHAN ROSS

UK / Channel Four-Channel X / x50m-e / 1990-92

Chat show with Jonathan Ross hosting in the style of his previous show The Last Resort.

 

TRISHA

UK / Anglia / x50m-e / 1998-continuing

Debate show hosted by Trisha Goddard, the show began life as Vanessa, with Vanessa Feltz. Anglia sacked Vanessa after her demands for a huge salary increase. Both Trisha and Vanessa have been hit by scandal stories of fake guests.

VANESSA

UK / Anglia-BBC1 / x50m-e / 1997-99

Debate show hosted by the larger than life Vanessa Feltz, after being sacked by Anglia the BBC (for some strange reason) took up her show. The show was often dogged by accusations of fake guests.

 

V GRAHAM NORTON

Nightly chat show with the outrageous comedian in a similar vein to his SO GRAHAM NORTON series.

 

WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIVE

Discussion based series with the debates often turning into slanging matches, presenters included Nicky Campbell and Mary Nightingale.

 

WHERE DO I SIT

UK / BBC2 / 3x30m-e / 1971 19 February - 5 March Fridays 9.20pm

Writer: Peter Cook / Producers: Ian MacNaughton, Peter Cook

Shambolic live chat show hosted by Peter Cook (who somewhat unusually appeared out of his depth). After 3 of the planned 13 editions the show was pulled.

 

WOGAN

UK / BBC1 / 1250x30m-e / 1982-92

A thrice weekly chat show hosted by Mr Blarney himself Terry Wogan. Everybody and their dad appeared on the show during its long run, often plugging their latest book, film, whatever. Terry's most ill advised guest was George Best (September 1990) who came on the early evening show obviously drunk. During the 'interview' Best proceeded to swear all over the shop and was later escorted off the set. In the autumn of 1991 former sportsman/presenter David Icke appeared on the show and declared himself to be the Son of God.

 

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE

BBC1-Talk Back / 6x40m-e / 2000 17 July - 21 August Mondays 10.00pm

A chat show hosted by Nick Hancock and with a single guest each edition, the show This Is Your Life style looked back at significant moments (even the unsavory ones) in the guests life.
