Algiers (United Artists 1938, Charlies Boyer, Hedy Lamarr)
Algiers is a remake of the 1937 French film “Pepe Le Moko” in which Boyer plays Pepe, a notorious thief hiding out in the Casbah. When he falls in love with a beautiful tourist, his voluntary captivity becomes unbearable. In 1948, remade, with songs, as “Casbah.”
Charles Boyer was originally offered the lead role in Pepe. Jean Gabin, who ended up playing the lead in the movie, then turned down the opportunity to appear in the Hollywood remake.
The famed Irene was the costume designer.
Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best Actor.
