Casanova 73 (BBC-1 1973, Leslie Phillips, Jan Holden)

Casanova 73

Sitcom Casanova 73 focused on married Henry Newhouse who can’t stop philandering and reacting to his roving eye. Leslie Phillip’s character’s surname is a literal English translation of the Italian Casa Nova.

The series, which is subtitled the adventures of a 20th century libertine, had it’s roots in the success of Dennis Potter’s controversial take on Casanova. The emphasis was much on farce, Henry Newhouse lurches from one misunderstanding to another but more often than not seems to come up smelling of roses.

Like Potter’s Casanova this came in for a fair amount of criticism from the Mary Whitehouse brigade, one of the reasons why only a single season was made.
