Falling Skies (TNT 2011-2015, Noah Wylie, Moon Bloodgood)
Scifi drama series Falling Skies is very much a case of co-creator and exec-producer Steven Spielberg returning to his first love – science fiction. The series opens with an alien invasion having laid waste to much of the Earth. Taking centre stage is history professor Tom Mason from Boston whose entire family has been torn asunder by the alien attack, his wife was killed in the first wave of fighting and one of his three sons has been taken prisoner. Tom is determined to not only rescue his son but also strike up a resistance movement with the aim of sending the aliens packing.
Meanwhile Anne Glass is a pediatrician who has set up a refuge for surviving children to try and help them in any way she can, she is helped by orphaned teenager Lourdes and also on the fringes of the scene is outlaw motorcycle gang led by John Pope. As the devastation wreaked by the aliens is felt across the world it is inevitable that these characters will come together as the main branch of the resistance movement.
The series mixes in elements of Survivors and V as well as lots of other nods to classic scifi. Noah Wyle takes the lead as professor Tom Mason (surely there could be no more dependable name than that for a lead character) and Will Patton also has a strong role as Weaver leader of the initial resistance movement.
The series kicked off with a double bill premiere of the first two episodes.
