My Family And Other Animals (BBC-1 2005, Imelda Staunton, Matthew Goode)
Period family drama My Family And Other Animals took us back to the 1930s where young Gerald Durrell and his family go to Corfu for an extended holiday. Gerry becomes madly keen on nature and starts collecting all kinds of animals in his room much to the annoyance of his mother, two brothers and sister all of whom have their own share of peculiarities.
Filmed on location in Corfu over five weeks and befitting a story about Gerald Durrell featuring many animals most of which had to be imported from the UK as the heavy use of insecticide to protect Corfu’s Olive crop has killed off much of the insect and small mammal population so loved by the naturalist. Durrell who grew up to a respected and well known naturalist founded the Jersey Zoo in 1959. He died in 1995.
Writer of this version Simon Nye was clearly enamoured with the book as 2016 saw him pen a very popular ITV version of the stories. This time out called The Durrells.
