Man At The Top: Welcome On The Mat (ITV 10 July 1972)
In Welcome on the Mat Susan is having to have an extended stay in a psychiatric hospital following the death of Barbara, Joe is doing his best to bring her round but he is feeling more than a bit out of sorts himself. He has thrown in his job in spectacular style (at the end of the previous episode) and decides to return to his Yorkshire root and his hometown of Dufton only to find that he is as just as much out of place there as he feels in London.
A midway marker of an episode Joe is clearly still recovering from the death of Barbara, he is also definitely drawn to Dr Helen Reid who co-incidentally happens to be in Yorkshire at the same time as him but she is unwilling (at this stage anyway) to take things further. Joe also finds time to sleep with an old girlfriend, stir the pot with a local councillor (who is also his cousin) and try to help out an old uncle over a land issue that could see his beloved pigeon loft taken away from him!
classic quote
“I’d do it again Joe, I’m every bit as good as them London girls, you see if I’m not.”
