Mrs Columbo (NBC 1979, Kate Mulgrew, Lili Haydn)

Published

Crime drama series spin off from Columbo that told cases of the wife of the shabby raincoat wearing Columbo.

In the Columbo show his wife was often mentioned but never seen. Kate worked as a journalist for the Weekly Advertiser in San Fernando, California and found herself involved in the solving of various crimes.

After a spell off air the series returned under a new title Kate the Detective and then again as Kate Loves a Mystery.

This final change, prompted by fears that the Columbo association was in fact hurting the show, saw Kate divorce Columbo and revert to her maiden name of Callahan. Kate was now working for the Valley Advocate in San Fernando. She also worked quite a bit with Sergeant Mike Varrick who was part of the Valley Municipal Police Department. This change coincided with a short break in the series between episodes 5 and 6.
